New Year's Events Across New England and Forecasts For Them

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

As usual, there are a handful of New Year's Eve events scheduled to ring in the new year. Unfortunately, a rainstorm will be moving through the region just in time for the evening and overnight hours. The good news is that it looks increasingly likely that there will be breaks in the rain throughout the evening and night, so it's guaranteed to be a washout! It will not be a cold rain, however, so there's that. Here are the events going on, so grab your rain jackets and ring in the New Year out (or in, whatever floats your boat).

Last updated 10am Friday, December 30, 2022

First Night Boston, Event start (Noon): Cloudy, 54 degrees; Midnight: Rain around, 53 degrees

The oldest First Night event in the nation is back in full force this year. That's good news for this year as there will be some indoor events going on, so if it gets rainy, you can duck into an indoor event. Note that there may be capacity limits on indoor events, so watch out for that. If you're not dead set on being there at midnight, the earlier you go the better as rain chances increase throughout the afternoon and evening. There may be lulls in the rain around midnight, so you could get lucky and have a dry countdown!

First Night Portsmouth, Event start (2pm): Cloudy, 53 degrees; event end (8pm): Showers beginning, 48 degrees; Midnight: Cloudy with showers around, 48 degrees

First Night Portsmouth may be a good option to try to dodge the weather. The fireworks show is at 7:30pm, not midnight, so you will dodge the heaviest of the rain. Portsmouth is going to be celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2023, and First Night will kick off the celebration!

First Night Hartford, Event start (2pm): Cloudy, 52 degrees; Midnight: Cloudy with rain showers, 49 degrees

Hartford's First Night will feature two fireworks shows, one at 6pm and other other at midnight. The good news for Hartford's celebration is that the rain may not be steady the whole time as the clock inches toward midnight. So you may catch a break and have a dry midnight. The forecast for midnight is the same as the forecast for the 6pm family fireworks as well.

MGM Springfield New Year's at the Commonwealth, Event start (7pm): Showers, 49 degrees; Midnight: Rain, 49 degrees; event end (2am): Rain, 47 degrees

INDOOR EVENT! If you love live music, this will be your spot! Not only will there be 7 hours of music, but this is an indoor event, so you will stay dry. I added the forecast since you will be walking to and from your car, so be prepared for that, but enjoy a roof over your head for the entertainment.

Killington New Year's Eve Fireworks and Groomer's Parade, Event start (10am): Cloudy, 43 degrees; Event end (6pm): Cloudy with showers around, 44 degrees, Midnight: Showers, 43 degrees

Killington Resort will be the place to be for skiers and other winter lovers. The resort's festivities include live music, skiing (naturally) and fireworks at 5:30pm. The weather for the fireworks will be, you probably guessed, showery. While the resort's event ends by 6pm, there are restaurants and clubs in Killington that have events scheduled to ring in the New Year at midnight. The good news about that is, of course, they are all indoors.
