A coastal storm stalled just offshore of Cape Cod on Thursday this past week and remained in place through Saturday. This cycled rounds of rain across eastern portions of southern New England. Dry air to the north thanks to an expansive area of high pressure led to a sharp northern and western cutoff in rain totals.
Cape Cod and the Islands were hit with days of rain, bringing over a half foot in places. Here are the totals, as reported by the National Weather Service, that exceed four inches. Note that some totals have not been checked for quality control purposes as of yet.
Chatham 11.69"
Brewster 8.28"
Dennis 8.1"
Harwich 7.87"
Orleans 7.02"
Eastham 6.65"
Yarmouth 6.07"
Sagamore 5.8"
Nantucket 5.34"
Barnstable 5.05"
Falmouth 4.84"
Edgartown 4.57"
Oak Bluffs 4.41"
Mashpee 4.37"

This event added seven communities to the continually growing list of New England towns and cities that have received at least six inches of rain from one storm over the past two years. After this event, the total is now up to 55. With Cape Cod's geography combined with the drawn out nature of this event, the kind of flooding seen in many of the other communities on this list did not occur with this event.
